Curriculum

On this page, you will learn what we are doing and any resources you will need to help your child be more successful in the classroom.  Working together we can make a difference!

Writing

In writing, students will learn how to write a story with several pages and several sentences per page.  Students will learn how to capitalize the first letter of a sentence, leave spaces between the words, make pictures that go with their writing and use an ending mark.  We will write three different pieces: narrative, how-to and persuasive writing.  Students will learn what each of these pieces are as well as become proficient writers in each.

Math

In math, students will cover a variety of topics in our Engage New York curriculum. We will complete daily lessons and worksheets in class. Throughout the year we will also work on counting to 100 by 1's and 10's as well as writing to 100 by 1's. Students will be expected to identify numbers 0-20.  At the end of kindergarten, they will have learned a variety of ways to solve math problems, including addition and subtraction.

Reading

We are SUPER READERS! Throughout the school year students will learn many strategies that super readers use during read to self and partner read.  These strategies will help your child with their reading and provide them with a strong foundation for reading.  These super powers include: reading the words, reading the pictures, pointing to each word once and only once, looking for sight words, getting your mouth ready, reading the whole time, staying in your reading spot, taking care of our books, etc.  Throughout the year, ask your child about their super powers and help them be SUPER READERS.

Science

Our kindergarten science units are: Plants and Animals, Forces and Motion, Weather and Engineering by Design.  During these units students will complete a variety of tasks including: worksheets, informational texts, videos, hands on experiments, partner work, along with others.  We will use discussion and exploratory learning to see how the world of science looks!
