Writer’s Workshop

In Writer's Workshop students will learn how to become independent writers!  They will start writing by drawing pictures, then begin to add letters and labels and finally add sentences and pages to their writing!  In kindergarten we will learn about three different types of writing - narrative, how-to and persuasive.

  • We will begin the year with a short unit to introduce students to Writer's Workshop.  During this time we will talk about the importance of writing and introduce basic writing skills.

  • We will begin learning about narrative writing. During these two units we will learn how to think about what we want to write about and then make a plan to put it on paper.  We will also focus on telling our story across the pages to aide in the writing process.  We will learn how to stretch out words - hearing and recording all the sounds we can and then add details, labels and speech bubbles to make our writing even better!  We will finish the narrative units by introducing a checklist to help students check their work and make their writing the best it can be.  After students use the checklist and make revisions, their writing will be ready publication and Share Chair!

  • Next, we will learn about How-To writing.  During this unit we will explore a variety of How-To books and videos to help students understand the concept.  The students will think about things they know how to do and then write down each step, in order, so the reader can learn and follow their steps.  Students are encouraged to write a new how-to book each day.  We will also focus on diagrams and labels to go with our books during this unit.

  • We will wrap up the school year by revisiting each unit of writing and making our writing the best it can be!  We will really be focusing on beginning our sentences with a capital letter, leaving spaces between our words and ending our sentences with punctuation.  We will also be working really hard at hearing and recording each sound we hear in a word.  All of these skills will prepare us for first grade!
